A Prayer about True Freedom

A Prayer about True Freedom

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

Merciful Father,

When the apostle Paul told the Galatians

they had been set free for freedom,

he wasn’t talking politics;

he was talking about

the rich, generous, and gracious

freedom we have in Christ.

On this Independence Day in America,

some of us celebrate America’s freedom,

but even more,

we celebrate the freedom we have

as citizens of your kingdom.

We are…

Freed from sin and shame

to bear the fruit of sanctification

and to live eternal life as your servants,

starting now (Romans 6:22).

Freed to outdo one another in love,

with honor, not slander,

with hospitable hearts,

assuming the best of others, not the worst (Romans 12:9-10).

Freed to serve God and serve others,

not to use our “freedom as a cover-up for evil” (1 Peter 2:16).

Best of all, we are freed

to spend all of our time, money, and energy

giving glory to you,

ourmighty and majestic God (Revelation 1:5-6).

Thank you for these truths which set us truly free (John 8:32).

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

A Prayer about How God Works in Our Work

A Prayer about How God Works in Our Work

Glorious God,

As this week begins

and our minds turn to our work,

return our minds to your wondrous works.

Show us how you are working in our work,

our work of changing diapers or changing sheets,

our work of building Legos or building homes,

our work of ministering the gospel or administering medications.

Whatever we do today,

may we “glory in [your] holy name”

and may we rejoice as we seek you. (Psalm 105:3).

When we feel weak and incompetent,

show us your strength

and surround us with your calming presence.

When the task before us seems impossible,

remind us that you are the miracle-working God (Psalm 105:5).

In Jesus’ strong name. Amen.

Read Psalm 105:1-6.

A Prayer about Doing Hard Work Heartily

A Prayer about Doing Hard Work Heartily

Gracious Lord,

I remember well the days of four children under six years,

the chaos, the clutter, the laundry, the diapers, the dishes,

the drudge of work that had to be done over and over and over again.

It could be disheartening if not downright depressing.

Today, I lift up any and all who find their work disheartening or depressing.

Help us to see beyond the micro-story of the dirty diapers we are changing

or the droning demands of an impossible boss,

to your meta-story, the story you are writing in us

through whatever work you have given us.

Help us to see your kingdom and your mission and the part you have given us to play in it.

How are you calling us to be an ambassador of Christ in our workplace?

How are you conforming us to Christ’s image in the patience required to do our work?

And what reward are you preparing for us even as we do this work (Colossians 3:24)?

As we see these things, empower us and energize us

to obey this command,

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,

as working for the Lord, not for human masters…” (Colossians 3:23).

Read Colossians 3:22-24; 2 Corinthians 5:17-21.

A Prayer about Disrupted Plans

A Prayer about Disrupted Plans

Sovereign Lord,

It’s not even the end of January,

and some of the plans and goals we made for this year

have already ended in what looks like “disaster” to us:

instead of being on track to run a 5k,

we had the flu and stayed in bed for a week,

instead of being more patient with our kids,

our teenager wrecked the car and we lost it,

instead of planning our anniversary trip,

our spouse was diagnosed with cancer…

All good plans…disrupted.

Thank you for the truth of this verse—

you were speaking to the Israelites

who were exiled in Babylon

because of their disobedience and sin.

Yes, their dreams had been crushed,

their plans changed,

but you promised them redemption and restoration

not after, but during

their time of exile.

Help us draw near to you

and trust in you in disrupted plans,

that we might see the good stories

you are writing in our lives

for your glory.

In Jesus’ redeeming name. Amen.

Read Jeremiah 29:1-11.

6 Ways to Plan in Uncertain Times

6 Ways to Plan in Uncertain Times

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year’s Eve! What does your end of the year look like? Feasting? Fireworks? Football? Taking down the tree? Decorating for a New Year’s party? (Just hit reply or share in the comments. I really want to know!)

I’ll make some sweet and sour collard greens and black-eyed pea salad and my hubby will smoke some pork for sure, and yes, we’ll take down the tree (we’re tree down by New Year’s kind of people). But I also always try to dedicate the last few days of December and the early days of January to some intentional time for planning. If you’d like to join me in the exercise I use, keep reading or scroll down to the end if you can’t wait, and you’ll find my free ten-page Story Planner printable.

Since the last few years have made chicken scratch of our planners, today I’ll share some tips for planning when the future is uncertain.

A Prayer about Trusting God for Transformation

A Prayer about Trusting God for Transformation

Faithful God,

As this new year begins, I and others are making plans,

hopefully good, God-authored plans

to pursue the unique callings you have given us.

As we do so, help us to take stock of the unique gifts

and wounds you have written into our lives:

[Name some of the gifts God has given you—

unique story, abilities, passions, etc.

and some of the wounds you’ve experienced (because God works to redeem all things].

Guide us by your Holy Spirit to see

the people, places, and things

you have called us to in the coming year.

[Take a few moments to listen to the Holy Spirit

about the people, places, and things

he is calling you to this year.]

Help us by the wisdom of Jesus,

who had perfect boundaries,

to know when to say “no.”

Help us by the grace of Jesus,

who served perfectly,

to know when to say “yes.”

In every step we take,

may we look to you and trust you

to complete the good works you have “prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10).

Read Proverbs 3:5-6; Colossians 3:9-13; Ephesians 2:8-10.
