A Prayer about Thanksgiving

A Prayer about Thanksgiving

Merciful Lord,

As we begin the month of November,

it seems fitting to offer a prayer of thanksgiving.

While in America, Thanksgiving Day is about

celebrating the bravery and endurance of early settlers,

our truest thanksgiving as settlers of your kingdom

is about something so much more profound.

We celebrate because we cried out to you

in our “distress and anguish,”

when we were entangled in “the snares of death” (Psalm 116:3).

You not only inclined your ear to us,

you sent your Son to save us out of our misery,

to deliver us from our bondage to sin and death.

Not because we deserved it.

Only because of your mercy and grace.

Not only did you deliver us from death,

you delivered “[our] eyes from tears,

[our] feet from stumbling.”

And now we will “walk before you

in the land of the living” forever and ever (Psalm 116:9).

Today and throughout this month,

when we think of thanksgiving,

may we think first of all the reasons we have

to give you thanks.

In Jesus’ saving name. Amen.

Read Psalm 116.

A Prayer about Banishing Cynicism

A Prayer about Banishing Cynicism

Creator King,

We confess, the cynicism of our age,

“the negativity that only sees

the worst of intentions

behind the apparent good motives of others” (Frank Bruni),

easily creeps into our hearts.

Under the influence of such cynicism,

we join in the cries of the skeptics,

we wear the scorn of the jaded.

We think we know everything,

and we brashly tap out our foolish thoughts.

Banish such cynicism from our hearts and minds.

Sharpen our vision to see your handwriting in the universe—

your glory lovingly etched

into a baby’s nose or a butterfly’s wings,

your grace generously displayed

in a dancer’s pirouette or a doodle’s welcome.

Rekindle our wonder

that you made us and loved us and saved us.

In Jesus’ marvelous name. Amen.

Read Romans 1:18-32.

A Prayer about Giving Thanks in Troubled Times

A Prayer about Giving Thanks in Troubled Times

Lord,

Yes, “let the redeemed of the Lord say so,

whom [you have] redeemed from trouble” (Psalm 107:2).

Even if we have seen trouble,

if we’ve been wandering

in “desert wastes….

hungry and thirsty…

our souls fainting within” (Psalm 107:5),

you have “delivered [us] from our distress” (Psalm 107:6).

[Name some of the troubles you’ve seen this week,

and how the Lord has delivered you from your distress].

Some of us “sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,”

either because of our own rebellion,

or because of the pain of living in this fallen world (Psalm 107:10),

and yet you have shown your “wondrous works to the children of man,”

and so we thank you for your “steadfast love” (Psalm 107:8,15).

[Name some of the dark places you have experienced in your life,

and how God showed his wondrous works to you].

And on and on we could go through this remarkable Psalm 107,

which names the storms and desert places of our lives

and demonstrates your kind redemption

in every place we have ever walked.

We thank you, Lord, and we praise you,

as those you have redeemed from trouble.

In Jesus’ redeeming name. Amen.

Read Psalm 107.

A Prayer about Thanking God for Creation

A Prayer about Thanking God for Creation

Lord God,

It is indeed good to give thanks to you—

when days are easy and when they’re not.

Today, I thank you for some of my favorite things

about your extraordinary creation:

The teal-turquoise-marine of the Gulf of Mexico

and the sugary velvet feel of the white sand.

The juicy explosion of a homegrown tomato

And ripe blueberries fresh-picked from a friend’s yard.

A purple-pink-and-blue sunset,

heat lightning against a dusky sky,

and lightning bugs twinkling in the dark.

[Name some of your favorite things about God’s good creation.]

As we meditate on your glory inscribed in your creation,

we thank you for the many good gifts

you give your beloved children

every day simply because you delight in us.

In Jesus’ creative name. Amen.

Read Psalm 96:1-13.
